Zachary’s Quilt

IMG_0363

My godson Zachary is graduating today from high school and to celebrate that milestone, I made him a quilt.  This is not just any quilt.  This is a quilt made from the shirts and jerseys he has worn for his entire baseball career from Little League through high school.

With the exception of the grey and red ones that say Almaden and 44 in the center column, all the blocks are from different teams.  The cornerstones are patches that I pulled off of the sleeves from several shirts.  The sashing and backing are a faded chambray print cotton in denim and the binding was a star print I had.   The quilt measures about 57” x 87” so it will cover his extra long twin sized bed at Boston College in the Fall.

To quilt this, I anchored each block by stitching in the ditch. Then I did a big boxed off spiral on each jersey and simple straight stitching in the sashing. This photo shows the texture pretty well.

I made a label and hand stitched it to the back.

I finished this right under the deadline and quickly snapped a few photos before sending it off. I really appreciated my helper’s wingspan.

Michelle sent me this picture of Zachary after he opened it.  I think he was as happy to receive it as I was with how it turned out.
