Sound Bites & Snap Shots

We always enjoy at day at the State Fair but the incentive to go is always greater when one of the boys has a project on exhibit there.  We were delighted to see that he earned a special merit ribbon and a blue ribbon for his computer poster. 

After looking at the 4-H projects, we spent the remainder of the day visiting the spots we like to see every year like the can art. 

If my memory serves me well, the cans are donated by Kroger, organizations construct the art display, and then the cans are donated to a good cause.

We love to see the work of Sara Kaufmann. Every year she carves a giant 1,450-lb. chunk of yellow and white cheddar into something that reflects the fair theme.  After the fair, the cheese is recycled into bio-fuel.

What needs to be said about these large pumpkins?

These elephants are made of gourds.  This one’s for you, Mo.

Lunch was a foot long corn dog and fresh BBQ chips. 

Our afternoon entertainment was the Monster Truck races. 

We got our seats pretty early, sat and ate lunch and then I knit on my sock until the start of the show.

We took a quick look at the horses.  Do you think this horse minds that we took a selfie with its arse? 

By far one of my favorite spots is the historical village. I just love talking to these folks who assume the roles of the pioneers.  Bill and the boys spoke to this gentleman about the gun.

They tested the saws and hand drills and then made a wood peg. 

I visited the potter.  Last year I bought a butter dish and this year a yarn bowl and a couple of wee pinch bowls. 

From there we headed back to the rides across the covered bridge.

We couldn’t get wristbands for today so we limited the rides.  Speed was high on Walker’s list and he convinced Mason to ride. For the record, I rode it last year.

Finally it was time for dinner.  Mason tried a bacon cheeseburger on a donut with French Fries, Walker devoured a Philly cheese steak sandwich and Bill had a tri-tip sandwich.  He stumbled upon this choice and it was so good, he’s declared he’d get it again.  I had my tried and true spinach vegetarian burrito.  Bill always loves to support the small organizations so he and Walker also had an ear of buttered corn from the Lion’s Club. 

With full bellies and tired feet, we headed to the car for the drive home after another successful visit to the Indiana State Fair.
