Yarn Bombing

Last Saturday was Worldwide Knit in Public Day.  My local knitting store planned to meet at the promenade to have a giant group of knitters out doing what knitters do best—knit! They ordered T-shirts and best of all, they planned to yarn bomb the rails of the promenade.

Yarn bombing is like graffiti but with yarn.  It can be either crochet or knit pieces and some of them are really creative.  If y0u google images of yarn bombing, you can see wild and crazy things people do.

I was not able to participate in the knitting event but I did submit a piece of knitting for the yarn bombing.  The store asked for 3” by 28” strips to use for the rails.  I grabbed a bunch of my leftovers and chose the most colorful ones I had.  I had no idea what others would make but I knew I wanted to be able to find mine again when I went down to see them all.  I enjoyed looking back at all the yarns I had incorporated into my piece because each one held a memory.  The extra long tails were used to whip stitch them around the rails.

Now for the gallery.  I took photos of every single panel and was downright impressed by what I saw.  There are loads of colorful samples.  While I did a very simple garter stitch piece, some incorporated cables, color work, textured stitches, bobbles, and the like.  The ladybug is one of my favorite. We interrupt the yarn bombing for a very cool tree trunk on the river line.  Mason was more interested in what was in the flood zone than in the yarn bombing.

Mason is zapping the yarn with Bill’s sonic screwdriver from Father’s Day.

I don’t know how long it will last but for now, the riverfront is a very colorful place and I’m glad I got to play a part in making it so.

PS.  Did you spot my strip?
