From Scratch

I just love how my husband will take something that sparks our boys’ interest and run with it.   A few nights ago, the boys and Bill watched a few food challenge and cooking shows.  One in particular caught their eye because they had just watched a friend make banana pudding at a 4-H meeting.  They liked it.  The difference between Alton’s and the 4-H versions was that the banana pudding on TV was made from scratch.

When Bill mentioned to his colleague that he was going to make banana pudding with them, she suggested the boys might also like Ooey Gooey Turtle Bars

IMG_5222The banana pudding recipe was Alton Brown’s, who uses only the best ingredients and who settles for no shortcut.  Yes, this meant the boys made vanilla wafers from scratch.

They came out looking just like real wafers!

As can be imagined, preparing two recipes with variations requires organization.  The helpers mixed, measured, crumbled and chopped ingredients.

After all the steps were followed, they had pecan and walnut ooey gooey turtle bars, banana pudding with merengue and banana pudding with whipped cream.  (Note: Bill modified the turtle recipe a little bit.)
